“Education is only solution”
World peace has long been the ideal in humankind’s history. The need and the urge for living in peace is not confined to the ideals of utopia alone but forms the very survival ingredient for a global community such as ours. It is incumbent upon each of us to find ways, in today’s self Divided Era, to contribute to world peace—one of the deepest means of which shall be education. Education is understanding, tolerance, and a cornerstone of unity between them, diverse groups.
As Nelson Mandela said, “Education is indeed the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.” If viewed from the standpoint of education for peace, it means much more than learning or gaining knowledge. It is what makes a person critically minded, understand the standpoint of others, and participate in constructive dialogue. Hence, good education is an equipping of a person with the basic tools to deal nonviolently with conflicts and open-mindedness toward empathy and global citizenship.
One major contribution that education can make towards world peace lies in the development of understanding and tolerance. Education helps break down the barriers of ignorance and prejudice that exist between different cultures, religions, and ideologies in the world. Teaching individual cultures, histories, and belief systems shows appreciation and respect for differences rather than fearing them. All of this is important in coping with the conflicts that have risen out of misconceptions and stereotypes.
Moreover, education arms individuals with abilities for participating in democratic processes and speaking out for peace locally, nationally, and globally. A society imbued with education will likely demand accountability from its leadership, support policies that promote peace, and shun those ideas that spur violence. In this sense, education helps people become active contributors toward peace instead of remaining passive.
However, the relationship between education and peace is not one-way. It has to be realized that education itself is not going to bring about world peace; it is the quality and content of education that matter. As Albert Einstein pointed out, “Peace cannot be kept by force; it can only be achieved by reason.” Thus, education should not focus on academic excellence but be based on values like empathy, compassion, and respect for human rights. There should be a view to including peace education, courses in the theory of conflict resolution, and examples of nonviolent groups at all levels of education. This inculcates the concept of peaceful coexistence in the students.
It will, however be noted that contributions toward world peace do not stop with an increase in the level of education. This day calls for people and corporate actions that believe in justice and fairness. Peace is absent in a world characterized by inequality and injustice. As Martin Luther King Jr. very famously put it, “Injustice everywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.” But the real way of achieving world peace has to begin with a society built on fairness and justice, where everybody obtains fundamental human rights to education, health, and economic rights.
Moreover, peace is not necessarily the absence of war; it also pertains to the conditions wherein each and every person will thrive. It involves reducing problems associated with poverty, environmental degradation, and social inequality. For instance, in this regard, one such situation is that poverty normally triggers frustration or despair, which in turn results in conflict. By solving the root cause of poverty through sustainable development and economic resilience, we contribute to world peace.
In other words, education, social justice, and teamwork together make the support for world peace multidimensional. Education is very essential in developing knowledgeable men and women who are compassionate and really join in with the principles of peace. But still, we must talk about broader issues of inequality, injustice, and environmental sustainability to gain sustainable peace. As we step into the new millennium, let us say what Mahatma Gandhi said: “Be the change you want to see in the world.” This is the task for every human being to bring about world peace and a just and peaceful world for the future.
